Delta Del Ebro
This is a little known natural gem in the south of Catalunya. We explore this beautiful area filled with rice fields, mussel farms, castles and flamingos.
“You will be losing out if you do not book a tour with these folks when you visit Barcelona. Thank you so much for the wonderful time!”
Take a road less travelled and escape Barcelona for the rice fields, pink flamingos and blue lagoons of the Delta Del Ebro. Nestled in the south of Catalunya, this unique wetland supports over 300 species of birds and is one of the largest wetland areas in the western Mediterranean. Our day is one of fun and relaxation, with something for the foodie and the nature lover in us all.
We visit a vineyard in Terra Alta that dates back to the 1920’s, where in a beautiful Gaudi inspired modernist building you can have some fun testing your sense of smell in the wine aroma room, before tasting some of their locally produced Terra Alta D.O wines which we pair with a selection of cured meats and cheese.
Our next stop on our day trip from Barcelona is to admire the views from a local castle, with its heritage firmly grounded in Roman times. Rebuilt by the moors and then converted into a castle convent, it is one of the best examples of Templar construction in the Western world and is well deserving of its “Monument of Cultural Interest” status.
The delta area is equally famous for both the natural park and its seafood, so no trip to this area would be complete without visiting a mussel and oyster farm in the middle of the sea. On a short boat ride out into the delta, you´ll see and learn how mussels and oysters are produced in the delta today. You´ll get to admire the spectacular vistas of the lagoons, mountains and sea, as we taste a selection of seafood fresh out of the local waters.
After our aperitifs overlooking the water, it’s time for a well-deserved lunch. Nestled in the heart of the delta, we’ve chosen a local restaurant with exceptional standards to enjoy traditional rice and paella dishes from this part of the country.
After our delicious lunch, we then head into the Natural Park to look for those gorgeous pink flamingos – taking a moment to relax, snapping photos and enjoying the natural surroundings, followed by a walk through the rice fields before returning to Barcelona.
